West Seattle wins Juniors state opener
West Seattle jumped right into the fray on the second day as the Junior Little League baseball state all-star tournament got underway this past weekend.
The Westsiders drew a bye past the first round of the age 13-14 action Saturday and opened on Sunday instead with a 6-0 shutout victory over the Key Peninsula team.
Key Peninsula was a 12-2 winner over South Kitsap in its first game Saturday to earn the right to play West Seattle, which came into the tournament as the District 7 champion.
West Seattle continued the tournament being played at Medical Lake High School near Spokane with a winner's bracket semifinal game against Cascade on Monday. A win there would advance the team to he winner's bracket final scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday. The first championship is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday followed by the if-necessary championship game at 4 p.m. that day. The loser's bracket final is at 7 p.m. Thursday.
West Seattle Legion
West Seattle's American Legion baseball season ended with a tight 5-3 loss at the hands of Juanita on Friday.
The No. 4 seeded Westsiders had opened the double-elimination Southern Division AA tournament at Woodinville High School with a 10-3 victory over No. 5 seed Bellevue on Thursday afternoon, but took an 11-1 loss to No. 1-seeded Eastlake that evening.
That dumped them into the loser's bracket, where they took the loss to Juanita on Friday afternoon.
PacWest Intermediates
A weekend split was enough to keep the PacWest Intermediate team alive in Western Regional action played in Irvine, Calif. at the Quail Hill complex.
The champions of the first ever Washington state tournament for players age 12-13 opened with a 6-2 victory over Montana Friday, but turned around to take an 11-1 loss to Southern California Saturday.
The PacWest team from Burien and SeaTac righted its ship again Sunday, dealing Nevada a convincing 15-3 loss.
PacWest jumped out to an 11-0 lead, scoring five runs each in the top of the first and second inning and adding one more in the top of the third.
Nevada scored one in the third, but PacWest rallied for four more runs in the top of the fourth to make it 15-1.
PacWest outhit Nevada, 15-6, led by the three hits of Robert Jarata. Christian Hagler and Ryan Moormeier had two hits apiece. Tyler Terlouw led the way with three RBI and Hagler and Casey Hillyard contributed two apiece.
Bryson Beltran and Hillyard both walked twice.
Hagler also struck out seven Nevada batters in only 2.1 innings of work. Hillyard also threw 2.1 innings in the game.
The Intermediate division is noted for its pitcher's mound 50 feet from home plate and for its 70 feet between bases. It comes between the Little League Majors and Juniors classifications.
