A 17-year-old burglary suspect was arrested in northeast Burien Friday, Oct. 4, after he allegedly fired a weapon multiple times towards an occupied vehicle.
According to Detective Stanley of the King County Sheriff's Department, at 12:45 p.m. on the 11400 block of Roseburg Ave. South, in northeast Burien, a Burien man who had recently reported his home burglarized spotted a teen who he believed may be responsible for the crime. When the man approached the teen, the suspect is said to have recognized him and the two began arguing. The victim told the suspect that he was going to call the police and returned to his vehicle. Before the victim could call the police, he looked into his rearview mirror and saw the teen pull a handgun out from behind his back and aim it at the vehicle. As the victim began to drive away, the suspect fired the weapon several times, hitting the vehicle at least once. Once the suspect drove to a safe distance, he called 911 and flagged down a deputy who was driving by.
Police discovered that the confrontation and shooting took place directly in front of a set of security cameras and were able to download images of the suspect. Photos were then distributed to deputies on duty in south King County.
At just after 4 p.m. on the same day, a deputy spotted a teenager in the 10600 block of Des Moines Memorial Drive South matching the description riding a bike less than a mile north of where the shooting took place. The suspect abandoned the bike and fled from the deputy into a nearby apartment complex.
Believing that the suspect was still armed, deputies surrounded the complex and evacuated the dwelling units. Hostage negotiators as well as the King County Sheriff's "Tac-30" unit soon arrived on the scene.
Just before 7 p.m. the suspect was taken into custody. At the time of the arrest, the suspect was still armed with the same weapon believed to have been used in the shooting earlier in the day.
No injuries were reported as a result of the shooting.
