Update 2:00pm
The King County Media Relations Officer, D.B. Gates, was on the scene to give updates on what is known so far.
The suspect drove through the front of the Big 5 store and then drove through the inside of the store to the gun section.
“He actually took a little drive through the store, he was inside, I mean he went all inside” described Gates.
The suspect then began filling his van with ammo and guns and retreated to the ceiling when officers arrived. Upon seeing the boxes of ammo responding officers reported that the suspect was believed to be armed.
Concerning the suspect Gates confirmed that they arrested a lone male with an extensive criminal history that included a prior felony conviction. The suspect is also confirmed to have “ties to other states” but at this time she was unsure which state.
The suspect’s identity has not yet been released.
The suspect refused to communicate with the officers during the standoff and was resistant upon arrest.
“They could hear him moving around up there and he started falling through the ceiling, it’s one of those false ceiling type deals, and he probably just lost his ability to stay on the beams or whatever it is up there. He resisted, we did have to taze him, but I don’t know if that actually connected since he was wearing super heavy clothing” described Gates of the standoff’s conclusion.
The streets were opened up immediately after the suspect was taken into custody. Gates confirmed that more information will be released throughout the day and later in the week.

This morning at approximately 7 a.m. a van crashed through the front door of the Big 5 Sporting Goods store on S.W. 148th in Burien. It is being reported that the suspects then got out and began to fill the van with guns.
One witness described that the van attempted to drive away but was caught by the closing gates to the store.
When police arrived the men retreated into the ceiling of the store and a standoff with S.W.A.T. and Burien P.D. began.
Police immediately shut down the entry points to the strip mall that the Big 5 is located in, shutting down the Big Lots next door as well. Teams surrounded all entry points and attempted to contact the suspects from the roof.
“Come on guys, we gotta make a decision here. If you don’t come out soon we will start gassing you, and I don’t think it’s going to be very safe for you guys to come out from ceiling once we start doing that” said one S.W.A.T. officer from a bullhorn at 10:30 a.m.
The standoff ended at 11:49 with one suspect being taken into custody without the use of gas.
More updates to follow.
