SeaTac Airport worker dials 911 from airplane cargo hold

A baggage handler from SeaTac International Airport is safe and sound after accidentally being locked into an airplanes cargo hold while sleeping on the job. Authorities were alerted to the incident on Monday, April 13, after a man called 911 from a cell phone and told the operator that he was trapped in a plane in the air. "I'm inside a plane. I feel it, it's moving in the air” he said before before his call dropped. The man was aboard an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 traveling between Seattle and Los Angeles. Just 14 minutes after takeoff, the captain and passengers heard yelling and banging from the plane’s cargo hold. Upon landing back at SeaTac the baggage handler emerged from the cargo hold unharmed and told authorities that he had accidentally fallen asleep while loading the plane. The man is an employee of Menzies Aviation which is contracted by Alaska. A representative from Menzies told reporters that the man, an employee who had worked for the group for 18 months, was never in serious danger as he was locked in a part of the plane that is pressurized and temperature controlled and that he was being placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation. Shortly after audio of the man’s 911 call was released the following Thursday, Alaska Airlines officially banned the man from working on their planes. The results of an internal investigation into the incident by Menzies has yet to be released. According to Alaska Airlines, all employees responsible for loading their planes undergo a full criminal background check before being hired and given security clearance.. Though the flight was delayed because of the return to SeaTac, travelers eventually made their trip to L.A. just a few hours late.
