Semi crash fire near Southcenter delays I-5 drivers for hours
Drivers on I-5 north in south King County were delayed for hours as crews responding from across the county dealt with a growing brush fire caused by a semi-truck rig that crashed through the interstate guardrail and into a narrow ravine. According to the South King Fire and Rescue, the accident took place in the early morning hours of Friday, July 24th, just after 2 a.m. when the truck and trailer crashed through a guardrail along Interstate 5 and down a 75-foot embankment into a ravine near the Southcenter Mall in Tukwila. The crash ignited a brush fire that spread from the semi-truck to nearby trees. Emergency responders arrived to find that the driver had successfully escaped from the cab of the truck but was still trapped in the ravine in danger of the growing fire. All regular northbound lanes of I-5 were closed as crews cut through brush using chainsaws and used a rope system to transport the driver up the embankment to safety two hours after the initial crash. The driver was then transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with serious but non life threatening injuries. The truck and 40-foot trailer, which was primarily transporting canned vegetables, was entirely consumed by the fire leaving nothing salvageable. The Washington State Patrol’s early investigation found that the driver likely fell asleep at the wheel. All lanes of northbound I-5 were reopened by morning commuter hours. The remains of the truck and trailer were removed Monday morning after commuter hours as to cause minimal impact on traffic. With the exception of the driver, no one was injured as a result of the accident.
