Margie (Cate) GIBB
Mon, 09/07/2015
Margie Gibb, 78, was born September 12, 1936 and graduated from Birdville High School in Haltom, TX. She moved to Burien, WA, where met her future husband, Noel Gibb, at the Firestone store that was located on 152nd St. Noel worked at Firestone prior to opening N & R Automotive.
She was a public figure, not in the sense that she held a title like her husband Noel, former mayor of Burien. More in the sense that volunteering came easy to her. Margie Gibb was the materteral woman of Burien. The first in line to help at community events. The first to open her arms and her heart to give of herself.
The former publisher of the Highline Times, Jerry Robinson, chose Margie as an annual Robby Award winner in 2008 for this very reason. After Dick Dahlgard and Jim Hughes, Margie was the first woman to receive the honor of excellence in community service.
Margie and Noel have been a mainstay couple in Burien for many years, operating Noel's service station down 1st avenue at 156th. Together they helped lead the way toward Burien's cityhood. Noel served as Burien's mayor in 2004-5 with Margie at his side. Margie was also there as Noel became president of Discover Burien earlier this year.
Each Spring, as the Thursday market opened in Town Square, Margie was there, at the information booth. On her other busy days she helped at Burien C.A.R.E.S, the animal shelter for stray and unwanted pets. Margie spent time helping Deborah George, events manager for Discover Burien during clean sweep time and other events on Burien's streets. She assisted Discover Burien executive director Andrea Raye when time permitted. She will be missed.
Margie was a founding member of Discover Burien, an active supporter and volunteer with Burien C.A.R.E.S, and a member of Glendale Evangelical Lutheran Church. Margie loved Burien and cherished her family, friends and animals.
Margie is survived by her husband of 49 years, Noel Gibb; five children, Steven Williamson (Karen), Dianna Walker (Bob), Rebecca Wallinder (Greg), Scott Gibb (Janet) and Staci Sarfert; 17 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
A memorial will take place Saturday, September 12, 2015, 11 a.m., at Glendale Evangelical Lutheran Church. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in Margie’s name may be made to Burien C.A.R.E.S. or Discover Burien.
