Two big plays paved the way for Bainbridge to beat Evergreen by a 14-7 score Friday, but that did nothing to spoil the Wolverines' homecoming festivities or a community-wide celebration of the life of Kenney Bui.
The hard-fought game was the first for Evergreen since the death of senior team member Bui following a head injury in a game three weeks ago.
"Considering the situation we've been through, I thought it was phenomenal," said Wolverines head coach Jim Wright of his team's effort in the game. "It's the first step in the right direction for the community, the family and Evergreen as a whole."
The community was involved in the fact that the bands and cheerleaders from the four Highline public high schools -- Evergreen, Tyee, Mount Rainier and Highline -- got together for the event.
The cheerleaders spelled out "Bui 11" for Bui's uniform number at halftime.
"We're grateful for the turnout and the outpouring of support from the community and all over the country," Wright said.
Bainbridge even stayed and applauded Evergreen's traditional Samoan dances after the game, and presented signed posters to the Wolverines.
Both teams and coaches were joined by cheerleaders in a gathering at midfield after the first of two dance performances.
On the field in the game the Wolverines stuck with the Spartans until the end.
Bainbridge struck first on the third play of the game, when Kyle Bierly ran for a 61-yard touchdown. Tanner Shattuck booted the extra point, and just like that it was 7-0 with 10:36 still to go in the first quarter.
Evergreen knotted the game with 6:39 remaining in the second quarter.
Sione Kamoto ran left for an 11-yard touchdown, then Vaeagi Savusa kicked the extra point to tie it at 7-7.
The game remained that way until 10:25 to go in the fourth quarter.
Adrian Rojas of Bainbridge then scored on a second big play for his team -- 54-yard run around the left end and down the sideline to pay dirt.
Shattuck's ensuing kick was good for a 14-0 lead that held the rest of the way.
