Police investigating oil dump in North Highline pond

As crews work to clean up the mess, police and State officials are investigating who might be responsible for the dump of up to 50 gallons of cooking oil into a drain that empties into a nearby King County storm retention pond in North Highline near the intersection of S.W. 100th St. and 13th Ave. S.W. Officials from the Washington State Department of Ecology discovered the oil on Sat., Nov. 7 and had crews beginning work on the pond the following day with efforts continuing through the week. According to representatives of the Washington State Department of Ecology, the oil is considered a toxic material and its presence in the pond will have a lasting negative effect on the wildlife and the complex environment connected to the water. Crews spent the day recovering and cleaning birds that live in the pond and removing the oil. They may be forced to continue cleanup efforts through November. Officials believe that it is likely that a restaurant or food truck dumped the oil into a nearby drain. The party responsible could be facing serious fines and even federal charges for the crime. Officials believe that lab analysis of the oil will help them determine its origin. Anyone with possible information about the oil dump is asked to contact the King County Sheriff’s Department or the Washington State Department of Ecology.
