City of Burien Issues Proclamation to Prevent Impaired Driving

The City of Burien has issued a proclamation recognizing December 2015 as Impaired Driving Prevention Month. The City Council issued the proclamation to call attention to the deadly consequences of impaired driving which can happen when drivers are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or when drivers are texting or using a cell phone while at the wheel.
The proclamation recognized James Nolan, a young Burienite who was killed as a passenger of a vehicle driven by an impaired driver on January 1, 2014. As a lifelong Burien resident, Nolan attended Mount View Elementary School, Cascade Middle School, Evergreen High School, and New Start Alternative School. He was actively involved in the community through the Olympic Boys and Girls Club and the Evergreen Community Pool. Nolan’s family was in attendance at the meeting to accept the proclamation on his behalf.
The proclamation reads, in part: The Burien City Council of the City of Burien, Washington does hereby proclaim December 2015 as Impaired Driving Prevention Month and ask all citizens to make responsible decisions and take appropriate measures to prevent impaired driving.
The City issues proclamations to heighten awareness around or draw attention to community programs, events, issues, achievements, and/or initiatives as a show of support and recognition for community endeavors and accomplishments. The City Council invites the community to join in recognizing the importance of preventing impaired drivers from getting behind the wheel.
