Members of the Burien City Council voted to select Brian J. Wilson as the next city manager for the City of Burien. The Council voted to approve his contract during Monday night’s Council meeting. Serving both Council and the community, Wilson will provide oversight of the day-to-day operations of the City of Burien.

I look forward to working in partnership with residents, businesses, and City staff in order to meet our Council's strategic goals and enhance the quality of life for our residents."

Interim City Manager Tony Piasecki will stay with the City for a period of time to make it a smooth transition.

“Wilson’s experience in economic development, sound fiscal management, and commitment to community engagement makes me confident the city will have a strong and competent leader,” Burien Mayor Lucy Krakowiak said. “I feel very proud of the hardworking and talented staff that will be working with him.”

“Brian Wilson brings not only a deep understanding of the issues that Burien and South King County face, but also an excellent reputation with his former staff and colleagues,” added Mayor Krakowiak.

“We are pleased he has chosen to serve Burien.”

Wilson has more than 30 years of public service. He most recently served as Chief of Staff for Mayor Jim Ferrell and as the City Manager/Police Chief for the City of Federal Way. Wilson also has a long history in law enforcement, serving as Federal Way’s Chief of Police for eight years, Deputy Chief of Police for ten years, and working his way up to Commander in the City of Renton’s police department.

Wilson is an active volunteer, serving on several boards for nonprofit organizations that address human services as well as a community credit union. Wilson has a Master of Public Administration from Seattle University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from Washington State University. Wilson grew up in Burien and still has family ties to the city.

The City received 38 applications from 15 different states for the city manager position. Five finalists were selected to be interviewed. The finalists also had an opportunity to meet both residents and staff, who provided comments about the candidates to Council.

Wilson will earn $165,000. His start date is July 10, 2017.
