Highline High School (HHS) students will move into Olympic Interim School one year later than planned, with no change to the scheduled opening of the new HHS. Students will spend only two years, rather than three, at the interim site. The new HHS is slated to open in fall 2021.
The reason for the schedule change is additional work needed at the Olympic site. The heating/ventilation/air conditioning (HVAC) system in building B is in worse condition than anticipated due to the age and type of equipment.
Repairing the HVAC system, in addition to the renovations already planned for the facility, would cost more than the value of the building. The main portion of building B will be demolished and replaced with modern, efficient portable classrooms that can be used well into the future.
It is not possible to complete this work in time for the start of school this fall. Students will stay at the current HHS through the 2018-19 school year and move to OIympic the following fall.
Demolition and salvage of the old HHS building were scheduled to begin in March 2019. This will now be delayed three months, but contractors have developed an accelerated construction schedule, and the new school is expected to open on time in September 2021.
“This is the best plan to ensure students and staff have a safe and healthy interim facility during construction of HHS and that Olympic is fit to serve as an interim facility for future projects,” said Highline Chief of Operations Scott Logan.
