Crime in White Center gets a lot of headlines and for good reason. Some of it has been dramatic in the form of shootings and murder that get widely shared and published.
Damaged in the recent fire at the Locker Room Tavern on 16th SW, Bizarro Italian Cafe has seen repeated burglaries. One of the owners Jaedra James shared this via Facebook on Oct. 6, "Bizzarro was broken into AGAIN last night, they’ve gotten in twice, they have attempted EVERY SINGLE NIGHT (not exaggerating) since the first successful attempt on September 26th.
We have camera’s, lights, an alarm, and 911 is called every time … we’re basically under siege …"
The Sheriff's office noted that over the last 90 days they've gotten three calls regarding the Bizarro Cafe and one, at 3:48am was responded to within 6 minutes.
But the real picture of crime is not found in anecdotes or sound bites. The King County Sheriff's office released the data on dispatched calls for the community for 2020 and for 2021 through September.
Numerically speaking, Auto thefts top both lists with 186 in 2020 and 101 thus far this year.
Trespassing is clearly trending downward with 113 last year and so far only 36 reported.
Simple assaults in 2020 were 93 and this year are at 55 with three months left.
Vandalism under $1500 got 84 calls last year and are now at 52.
Larceny TFA (Theft from Auto) got 64 calls in 2020 and thus far are at 36.
The often discussed Commercial Burglary stat came to 58 in 2020 and in 2021 are now at 37.
Across the board most crimes are, according to these stats actually going down.
In a recent community meeting local deputy Bill Kennamer explained that for the past 23 years, the King County Sheriff has operated two patrol cars to patrol what is referred to as K-7, an area bounded by 31st Ave SW on the West, Roxbury Street SW on the North, SR 509 on the east and SW 116th on the South.

Not all crimes or attempted crimes prompt a call to 911 of course so the picture of crime is a not entirely told through the numbers..
