Optimistic despite setbacks
By Dean Wong
With two new coaches and some seniors who did not turn out this year, the Ballard Beavers are moving ahead as the 2007 KingCo season begins.
Former head coach Michael Bruesch has moved to Chicago and Thor Tyson has taken over the program.
Dave Dawson, the diving coach in recent seasons has also moved away from Seattle. His position has been filled by Madison Graham, a University of Washington junior.
Several senior swimmers have decided not to turn out this year for various reasons.
"We lost some seniors who are doing other things. We lost a bunch of them who are getting ready for college or baseball," said Tyson.
There's plenty of talent left on the team, although it is not as deep as in the past.
Perry Sharify went to state last year and was second in the 200 IM. "He is real strong and will do well at state again. I look forward to seeing him at meets and see what he can do," said Tyson.
Dylan Walker is Ballard's top sprinter.
"I've coached him since he was ten at Blue Ridge. He has a nice feel for the water and has a nice technique," said Tyson.
In diving, Price Hardman is the leader. Tyson feels Hardman has the talent and if he is consistent, can make it to state. "He's vocal and communicates. He's another quality athlete on the team," said Tyson.
The relay teams have been hurt the most with the loss non-returning swimmers. "We will wait and see which the mid-level swimmers can step up and make contributions," said Tyson.
The diving team is in good hands with their new coach. "She (Graham) is doing real well. Diving is looking good. She has a strong vision of what she wants to do," said Tyson.
He is pleased with the swimmers he has and predicts a middle of the pack finish with a possible surprise higher placement in the KingCo standings.
"They are top notch kids. They are responsive and listen. I can't ask for more as a coach," said Tyson.
"We lost a lot of guys and are top heavy with seniors, a new coach and new dive coach. I think we can do as well as last year," said Sam Booth.
Walker said the team has been doing more "land routines," that include sit-ups, push-ups and abdominal work.
Tyson has coached swimming in Oregon and at Franklin High in the late 1990s. He has coached water polo at Roosevelt, Shorewood Pool and Blue Ridge Pool.
"I love Ballard, it's the best place to coach in the city," said Tyson. He credits the Ballard Athletic Boosters with providing extra funds to pay for morning pool time.
Ballard takes on Woodinville on Dec. 14 and Garfield on Dec. 21. Both meets are at the Ballard Pool and start at 3:30 p.m.
