We are writing this letter in response to the article, "Is old Denny's a landmark?" in the Jan. 9 edition of the newspaper. As members of the community, we read the article with interest and learned a great deal about the architectural style of the said building.
We've always considered the building to be out of place with the architecture of the neighborhood. And now we understand why. We believe the "Googie" architecture style that was first made popular in southern California does not translate well in the Northwest.
We question whether the architectural value of the building is valid here. And we question whether the structure could be brought back to its original form and be financially feasible in today's economy.
We are greatly concerned about the properties adjacent to the building. If the Denny's property was brought back to its original form, what would be done to improve and enhance the adjacent buildings that are badly in need of repair.
We believe the plans for a new mixed-use complex at that site would benefit the people in the Ballard neighborhood to a much greater degree.
