The Bayview Golf Club of West Seattle Golf Course welcomes all golfers with an established handicap to play in the 12th annual Bayview Memorial golf tournament on Sunday, August 28.
The tournament is an 18 hole stroke-play format, with gross and net prizes awarded in each division.
The Memorial has a rich history. Former Bayview Captain Mike Shoemaker created the Coghill Memorial tournament to honor former Bayview Secretary Angus Coghill.
The primary objective of the Memorial tournament is to help support the Bayview Memorial scholarship fund. Each year, the fund awards a full year of tuition at South Seattle Community College to a deserving local high school student who shows academic excellence and a commitment to community. The tournament has now been moved from its typical October date to a preferrable late August date in hopes of generating more interest and greater sponsorship.
The scholarship fund is supported through tournament participation, local business sponsorship, and donations, as well as from Bayview's 700-plus members through their annual dues. Bayview's goal is generate enough support through fundraising events to award multiple scholarships or extend the current scholarship to a full associate degree.
This tournament also honors those officers who have passed away after giving their time to better this organization, including Dick Hill, Don Brentsen, Greg Cramer, and Jack Hathaway.
"Education is a big part of golf," said three-time Memorial winner and defending champion Mike Joyce . "Giving a local student who might otherwise not have the opportunity a chance to attend our community college is what the tournament is all about."
Scholarship recipients have come from West Seattle, Chief Sealth, and Holy Names high schools.
"I greatly admire the work the Bayview Golf Club members are doing ," said Richard Penny, executive director of the South Seattle Community College Foundation. "They are coming together in support of opportunity and education. By raising money for scholarships they are creating new futures for young people in our community."
