Seattle Lutheran held its first football homecoming in school history last Saturday afternoon by defeating Quilcene 14-7.
The come-from-behind win was the Rangers only league loss of the year and the game evened Seattle Lutheran's record to 2 and 2 in league, 3 and 4 over all.
Quilcene scored their only touchdown on their first play from scrimmage on a 60-yard run by Bret Kenney.
There were five minutes remaining in the first quarter when Matt Bigliardi sacked the Quilcene quarterback causing him to fumble. Anthony Fix recovered the fumble for the Saints, who then drove downfield and scored on a 4-yard run by Alex Stockstill. The extra point was missed and the Saints went in at half time trailing 6 to 7.
In the third quarter, Seattle Lutheran's Art Knick recovered a Rangers fumble on the Seattle Lutheran 44-yard line. The Saints took advantage of the turnover by marching 56 yards with Mark Howell getting the final yard for the go-ahead touchdown and what turned out to be the winning touchdown. Seattle Lutheran had two big plays in the drive, a 15- yard run by Alex Stockstill and a 26- yard pass completion from Stockstill to Lucas Bigliardi. The same combination hooked up for the two-point conversion to give the Saints a 14 to 7 lead.
Quilcene got down to the Saints 20-yard line with five minutes to go in the game but the Seattle Lutheran defense turned Quilcene away by taking over on downs. The defense, after giving up the 60-yard run on the first play, only allowed 134 yards the rest of the game. The defensive line consisting of Jonathan Kranich, Alex French, Josh Longanecker, J.B. Lusher, Ryan Fleming, Daniel Williams, Matt Bigliardi, Anthony Fix and Tim Allen kept the Quilcene linemen from getting to the Saints linebackers so they could make the tackle.
The next game for Seattle Lutheran is Saturday, Oct. 29 against Chief Leschi at Fife High School at 1 p.m.
