The West Seattle Chamber of Commerce wants permanent directional signs put up along State Route 99 and Interstate 5 showing the way to Alki Beach and perhaps other West Seattle attractions such as Lincoln Park.
Executive Director Patti Mullen got applause for the suggestion from Chamber of Commerce members during the organization's annual meeting last week. She recommended West Seattle's destination attractions merit the same highway signs as Green Lake and Woodland Park Zoo, both of which have directional signs on State Route 99.
Currently there are no posted signs directing motorists to West Seattle from either highway. Mullin urged signs that say "Alki Beach" or "Seattle city beaches."
Chamber member Terry Williams elaborated on the suggestion, suggesting each neighborhood business district could be signified by a different colored flag to help guide people to the Admiral District, Westwood Village, Morgan Junction, Delridge and the Alaska Junction.
Williams also suggested two shuttle buses could travel a figure-8 route through West Seattle to connect all five commercial areas.
Sue Camou Arrant, executive director of the West Seattle YMCA, was installed as the Chamber's new president at the meeting. She replaces outgoing president Amy Bovenkamp of Bovenkamp Chiropractic & Massage.
