Superintendent Raj Manhas said last week that Seattle Public Schools takes the allegations made in a copyrighted story in the Seattle Times very seriously.
The allegations concern recruiting for girls' basketball at Chief Sealth High School in violation of rules set down by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association. Recruiting and many of the actions alleged by the newspaper were in violation of those regulations.
"We are conducting an investigation regarding possible recruiting and player eligibility violations with the guidance of our Legal and Human Resources staff" Manhas said. "I ask for your support and patience as we conduct a thorough and impartial investigation and resolve this matter as soon as possible.
"As superintendent and leader of Seattle Public Schools, I expect honesty in both the classroom and on the athletic field. The concepts of fair play, teamwork and integrity are core values our students need to succeed in school and in life. It is our responsibility as adults, both in the classroom and the community, to help our students build character and serve as role models for our youngsters.
"Upon conclusion of the district's investigation, we will take appropriate action if these allegations are substantiated. Any violations regarding district and state athletic policies will not be tolerated."
