On Friday afternoon, a local 18-year-old was allegedly speeding down Highland Park Way at 2nd SW when he lost control of his car. He hit and killed a 58-year-old Junction-area resident who was riding his bicycle on the bike trail. The suspect was released from the precinct but will be investigated for vehicular homicide charges.
A young man held a butcher knife to his throat and threatened to kill himself after the latest in a series of family disappointments. His great-grandmother explained to officers that several of the boy's relatives died recently, that his mother is an addict, and that the boy just learned his father doesn't want custody of him. The crisis occurred after the youth was told he would be going into foster care as grandma was too frail to take care of him any longer. The boy was cooperative with officers and his school counselor, who accompanied him to Children's Hospital for an examination.
At 61st and Admiral, a man was helping a disabled woman cross the street when a woman in her 30s, driving a small black SUV came to a "screeching halt," nearly hitting them. The driver then began yelling at the two pedestrians. As the Good Samaritan passed her car, he yelled at the suspect to "get out of his sight," and he slapped his hand on the back window of her car. The driver turned the car around and began following the two, yelling and screaming derogatory names. She then said, "I'm going to find out where you live," and proceeded to threaten the man.
A man called 911, said he had heard a shot at a nearby home and that when he went to see what had happened, someone came to a window and said, "Call the police." Officers responded and set up a perimeter, much to the confusion of the young woman and child inside the home in question, who had no idea what was going on. When officers spoke with the original caller, he admitted that he might have imagined the incident, as he had not been taking his psychotropic medications as prescribed. He was taken to Harborview for a mental examination.
An Admiral-area resident reports that someone took four rims and tires from his car overnight and left the vehicle sitting on blocks on the street.
After crashing a stolen car into a Beach Drive telephone pole, three teens ran down the street and into neighboring yards. Two were grabbed and held by residents, and a third was found at a nearby bus stop. The Youth Service Center refused to take custody of them, so the three were released to their parents. All will be investigated for auto theft.
An elderly woman in the Gatewood area called 911 to report that she had been burglarized and that the suspects were behind the house in a blue vehicle. The responding officer found no blue car but did discover that the woman's home was cluttered, dirty, and posed a fire hazard. As he spoke with her, she "looked past" him and began speaking to unknown persons and animals. The officer also reports that ants were crawling on the woman's body and on her clothes. She was taken to the hospital for a mental health evaluation.
