Adding sunshine and blue skies to the three-day Memorial Day weekend can equate ferry use to traffic backups on Friday afternoon and evening heading to your destination and again on Monday, as travelers head home. It's usually a good idea to pack some patience as travelers head out.
But rest assured Washington State Ferries will get you where you're going.
Washington State Ferries will be supplementing service this Memorial Day weekend to help meet traffic demands but travelers should expect some delay. Travelers are encouraged to travel during non-commute times - 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. or after 7 p.m. Returning home, it's best to travel as early in the day as possible. If you're traveling with small children, toys and games and a picnic lunch can make the wait seem like part of the trip.
There will be no Seattle/Vashon passenger-only service on Memorial Day. The rest of the system will sail a regular Monday schedule.
This Friday, ferries will operate on a regular schedule in the San Juan Islands but with an unscheduled 3 p.m. trip from Anacortes to Lopez Island. On Saturday and Sunday, the Island ferries will be operating on the normal spring sailing schedule.
On Monday, the Anacortes/San Juan Islands route will be on a Sunday schedule, which provides an additional sailing from Orcas Island in the afternoon at 4:15 p.m.; Friday Harbor gets additional capacity at 4:15 p.m. which means that the 4:55 p.m. sailing off Lopez will take some vehicles, but there will be additional capacity on the 5:35 p.m. sailing from Lopez.
On Friday, May 26, there will be an extra sailing from Clinton at 8:55 p.m. and from Mukilteo at 9: 20 p.m. to help with expected additional traffic.
The holiday sailing schedule will be in effect on Monday, May 29, for the following routes: Edmonds/Kingston, Mukilteo/Clinton, Seattle/Bainbridge, and Point Defiance/Tahlequah.
