As a Seattle voter, I am very concerned about the viaduct/tunnel choice that we, as Seattle voters, will need to make. Why am I concerned?
I want to vote on the official ballot title, not the pros and cons. From my best up-to-date information, as of Feb. 1 from the Seattle City Clerk's Office as to the ballot wording, this is what I was told: The wording on the ballot will reflect the change made on Jan. 24 which indicates costs, lanes for both tunnel and viaduct and area covered from a conversation between the governor and the mayor.
From the best information I could get from the King County Elections Dept as of Feb. 1, the ballots and the Voters Pamphlet will probably be mailed to the voters sometime between Feb. 7 and Feb. 28. Since we vote on March 13, the Voters Pamphlet and our ballot should be in our mailbox by March 6.
However, with this information, I am just as confused as I was about the facts that I want to consider: safety from both proposals; public access to public shoreline at the central waterfront with either proposal; views of the mountains and shorelines, and cost, including the maintenance, upfront costs, and cost overruns that Seattleites might have to pay. From information I have, these concerns are not addressed and neither are the facts available at this point.
Therefore I am going to vote no on both options. I would hope that those of you who plan to vote on these two options look carefully at the official ballot title, the Explanatory Statement, and decide if you have all the facts before you vote one way or the other.
As a lover of Seattle, a voter, and a resident in the Alki area for almost 40 years, I am very concerned about the outcome of this election without all the facts available.
