Within the City of Seattle a special working relationship thrives through a Memorandum of Agreement between Seattle Parks and Recreation and the Associated Recreation Council (ARC) and its member advisory councils.
ARC is comprised of 37 advisory councils sharing a common purpose with Seattle Parks to provide community supported, high quality programs and services. Advisory council financial activities are processed through ARC. Advisory councils, because of their separate legal status, retain all fees, revenues and donations in their local community for use in operating local advisory council programs. Camp Long's Advisory Council is currently made up of eight dedicated individuals from our community who raise funds for environmental program support, oversee the trust of those funds, and advise the staff at Camp Long about community interests. Anyone who has skills to offer and the time and interest is welcome to apply to be an advisory council member. Call 684-7415 for more information.
Seattle Parks has Naturalists and Public Education Program Specialists stationed at Camp Long. In partnership with ARC, they help devise programming, market programs, and hire, train, and schedule instructors for both our public and organized group programs. Program instructors lead environmental education programs for organized groups all year round. Most of the work, however, takes place when schools are in session in spring and fall. They work in a variety of wild habitats including forests, creeks, wetlands, ponds, and beaches.
Through hands-on activities, environmental games, and explorations the programs offer fun and exciting approaches to science education and nature exploration. Some instructors are also hired for public programs and recreation activities like family nature walks, special events and rock climbing. Camp Long is currently looking for instructors for its spring classes. If you'd like to apply, please call contact Christian Ver at ARC, 615-1896.
