I am a resident of the Fauntleroy community and understand the transportation needs of the Vashon Islanders and residents of the Southworth area. However, I must echo the complaints that most Fauntleroy residents have expressed but apparently have fallen upon deaf ears of our elected officials, particularly the mayor (isn't he a long time resident of West Seattle? Oh yes, he doesn't have to deal with the ferry problems, so why care?).
I implore the mayor or the chief of traffic control to drive down Fauntleroy Way along the Lincoln Park between 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Here's what they will most likely find: 1) cars lined up in blocking access to bus stops making ingress and egress from the 54 - unsafe; 2) cars stopped in cross hatches and blocking residents' driveways; 3) Ferry line vehicles stopped in crosswalks and/or parking lot exits; 4) illegally parked cars after 3 p.m. and ferry line cars attempting to pass them and blocking traffic on Fauntleroy Way; 5) The periodic "U-Turn" from the Northbound lane into the Southbound Ferry Line on Fauntleroy, which in the past has caused at least six major accidents in the last three years; and 6) cars speeding down Barton or Fauntleroy to make the ferry.
The most egregious and consistent problems involve the illegal stopping in cross hatches, driveway entrances and bus stops.
My solution to many of these problems is to have traffic enforce the laws. No need to issue a ticket, the 'parking ticket' will not get their attention as they would see it as a cost of commuting. Instead just have the officer treat these violators like the children they appear to be, send them to the back of the line or give them a 'time out' and send them to the north parking lot for 40 minutes. After they missed one or two boats, I think that the word will get around on the ferry and people will start to obey the law.
