Meet Sister Barbara
I spotted her entering the check out line at the Fred Meyer store in Burien just as I entered and offered to give up my spot. She pleasantly declined so I asked her name and told her mine. "No thanks," she said.
Then she said, "I know who you are. I work for you at the Herald. I am sister Barbara Mc Cormick, Episcopalian nun."
I was a little embarrassed but covered it by saying "you are quite a long ways from the (Admiral) Junction."
She smiled sweetly and said, "I never buy without coupons" and flashed a handful she dug from her purse. I told her Elsbeth always has enough coupons in her satchel to paper the Great Wall of China.
Then I took her picture and when I got a chance asked circulation chief Bob Tornow about her.
"She is wonderful , always pleasant, willing, outgoing and serene," he said. "Sometimes she will even volunteer to deliver the paper when we have a down route or a sick paper carrier."
I told Elsbeth about her later and she asked, "Did you happen to notice what coupons she was using?"
