The Washington State Working Group on Race and Reconciliation in Law Enforcement will hold a summit in Burien on Thursday, Sept. 22.
The event, "Law Enforcement and the Faith Community Working Together to Promote Justice: A One Day Summit to Build Understanding and Promote Collaboration Between Communities of Faith and Law Enforcement," will take place at the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Center.
King County Sheriff's Sgt. johnUrquhart said the purpose of the summit is to enhance communication and collaboration between law enforcement leaders and members of the faith communities they serve.
It is expected to draw participants from across Washington state.
Keynote speaker for the event will be Richard R. Rodrigue (pronounced Rodriguez), deputy chief of the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, New Orleans, Louisiana.
Rodrigue has over 40 years of law enforcement service, and was instrumental in rallying pastors and members of their congregations in the African-American community to participate in education and training sessions with local law enforcement.
The summit is sponsored by the King County Sheriff's Office, State Training Center, the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs, Law & Justice Department at Central Washington University, the Western Regional Institute for Community Oriented Public Safety, and the Washington Working Group.
