Thank you, Ms. McIntyer, for your recent letter to the Times/News complaining that you received a flyer from the city of Burien in both English and Spanish. Also, you were offended that a native Spanish speaker was provided an interpreter in a court of law. It is always good to know where other community members stand on issues such as these.
Now, I have not lived here, as you have, “since the streetcar went to Seahurst,” but here are a few things I know.
It takes about five years to become fluent in a foreign language, like English, after moving here from another country. I, for one, am relieved to learn that the city of Burien is making sure that residents from, say, Mexico, who have been in this area perhaps only three years, are fully informed of community events and are able to understand court proceedings.
