Highline School Board members adopted on Nov. 9 the formal ballot language for a $148 million capital facilities bond measure to be decided by voters on March 14.
They decided on Oct. 12 to place the bond on the ballot.
The measure would finance the rebuilding of four elementary schools: Shorewood in Burien, Midway and Parkside in Des Moines, and Marvista in Normandy Park.
McMicken Heights in SeaTac would also be replaced using state matching funds.
In addition, the bond would finance Camp Waskowitz renovations, security and safety upgrades, and new technology equipment purchases.
Board members also honored Steve Denmark, who is leaving the board.
His colleagues described Denmark as a “graduation addict” who loved attending and speaking at high school graduation ceremonies.
Board member Matt Pina noted, “Steve always had his focus on the kids and the community.”
Admitting his “addiction,” Denmark declared, “Nothing compares to graduation. Wow! It is the personification of every single thing we do.”
Instead of seeking re-election to the board, Denmark ran for a seat on the Burien City Council. He was defeated by Deputy Mayor Joan McGilton in last week’s election.
Denmark will be replaced by Julie Burr Spani, who ran unopposed.
Susan Goding will also join the board after beating Mengstab Tzegai. Tzegai was appointed to the board two years ago.
President Tom Slattery announced that the election of new board officers will be held Dec. 14.
