A piece of local history
After a quick Thanksgiving trip to Portland, we returned to open our Highline Times and there was the write up of the plane crash in our Boulevard Park neighborhood exactly 50 years ago.
My husband said, “Remember that?” And I exclaimed, “I certainly do.”
We were sleeping in the back bedroom of our house when I woke up and saw flames through the window. I yelled, “Jack! Wake up! There’s a fire somewhere nearby.” But he only muttered, “Go back to sleep, you’re having another nightmare again.”
Well, the next day we learned otherwise.
Later I read the account in The Highline Times of a mother far away, Pennsylvania maybe, who dreamt that she saw her military son escaping through flames from a burning plane at the instant it happened. Fortunately he survived.
Thanks for reminding us of a piece of unforgettable history in our area. Maybe my memory is not totally gone and now I’m sure the soldiers who experienced it will always remember the good people who rescued them.
