The Samoan Christian Fellowship Church honored the Des Moines City Council with a celebration during the council’s Jan. 12 meeting.
Councilman Bob Sheckler was re-elected mayor by consensus. Councilman Scott Thomassen was elected mayor pro tem, also by consensus.
“I will do my utmost to retain your confidence for the new few years,” Sheckler declared.
As a show of respect to the mayor and his fellow council members, the Samoan Christian Fellowship Church presented gifts, including a roasted pig, to the lawmakers.
The Samoan Christian Fellowship Church, now in Des Moines, moved to a new building in November from its former location in Burien.
“We’re so happy to become a part of the city,” said Pastor Tuugasala Fuga.
“Our new city and home deserves this honor,” said Rudy Allen, spokesman for the church.
The presentation to the council is seldom done within their culture.
A large thatched blanket -- a Samoan gift of respect -- was presented as a symbol of shelter.
In addition to the roasted pig, cans of corned beef and tuna as a plate for the king and other gifts were given to the council.
Leis were also given to each council member; they were worn throughout the meeting.
At the end of the presentation, the council and those attending the meeting gave a standing ovation to the church members.
“Thank you for your respect,” said Councilmember Dan Sherman, referring to the honor bestowed by the church.
