The Domestic Violence Task Forces of South King County will host the first Steppin' Out to Stop Domestic Violence Walk-A-Thon on Sept. 30.
The Walk-A-Thon-the first of many events planned locally during Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October-will be held on Green River and Interurban trails and in the Starfire Sports facility at Fort Dent Park in Tukwila.
Participants will have the option of a 10K (6 mile) or 5K (3 mile) walk. The event is open to all interested supporters with registration for both individuals and teams.
Participants who pay the $10 registration fee and turn a minimum of $20 in pledges (total $30) by September 18 will be eligible for a T-shirt and other prizes. Awards will be provided for those individuals and teams that raise the most in pledges.
Task Forces organizers noted that the Walk-A-Thon and other events in October are important because domestic violence is a continuing problem for many families in South King County.
Organizers of the SOS Domestic Violence Walk-A-Thon will focus proceeds of this event on the needs of children who are victims.
In addition to fundraising to support prevention efforts and services for children experiencing domestic violence in South King County, organizers plan to use the event to:
Raise awareness about domestic violence, specifically how it affects children.
The SOS Domestic Violence Walk-A-Thon is a collaborative effort of the eight task forces in South King County and the South King County Community Network, which has focused its efforts on helping to heal children who have experienced domestic violence.
Additional partners include the city of Tukwila, Starfire Sports at Fort Dent Park, YWCA, DAWN, Towne & Country Suites, Teamsters Local 117, MultiCare, Avon and the King County Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
