after boys find gun
A 16-year-old Evergreen High School student was accidentally shot and killed on Sept. 21 by a 16-year-old relative.
Sgt. John Urquhart, King County Sheriff's Office spokesman, said around 9:30 p.m. the boys were in the basement of a home in the 12000 block of Occidental Avenue South.
The suspect was showing the victim, Michael Miller, a gun he reportedly had found on the street when it accidentally went off. The bullet struck Miller in the chest, fatally wounding him. He died at the scene.
Other reports indicated the gun ma have been brought from school.
"Our own investigation and our conversations with the King County detective on this case indicate that the gun was not obtained at school," said Catherine Carbone Rogers, director of communication and community relations for the Highline School District.
The suspect was booked into the Youth Detention Center for investigation of manslaughter, said Urquhart.
Man dies in SUV roll over
A 25-year-old SeaTac man died after his SUV rolled over in Kent on Sept. 22. Kent police reported the victim was not wearing his seatbelt.
The man, who was not identified by deadline, was driving in the 2100 block of South 272nd Street near Des Moines around 2 a.m. when he rear-ended another car.
The impact caused his car to roll several times. Officers said he probably died instantly.
Boy, 9, shot by brother
A 9-year-old boy was shot in the face by his 15-year-old brother on Sept. 17 in the 12400 block of 10th Ave. S.
The older brother allegedly bought the gun off of the street, Sgt. Urquhart said. It had been reported stolen out of the Tri-Cities area.
The victim, who was shot through the cheek, was treated at Harborview Medical Center.
Charges are pending against the victim's brother.
Drive-by BB gun shooting
An 11-year-old boy was shot in the cheek with a BB gun while sitting outside North Hill Elementary School.
On Sept. 18, around 4 p.m., the boy saw a small black car drive past him, it turned around and came back towards him and he saw someone sitting in the back seat of the car lean out with a BB gun and shoot at him.
A Des Moines Police officer patrolled the area for suspects.
The suspect is described as between ages 14-16, white, with blonde hair. He was wearing a red and gold stripped polo shirt.
Tail light leads to arrest
Two people were arrested on drug charged during a traffic stop in the 23800 block of 20th Ave. S. in Des Moines on Sept. 17.
A Des Moines Police officer pulled over a car with a broken tail light around 12:30 a.m.
The officer could smell marijuana coming from the car, and arrested a 19-year-old male. After putting him in the patrol car, the officer went back to talk to the 18-year-old female passenger and observed saw her putting something under the drivers side seat.
She was also arrested after the officer noticed her eyes were blood shot and the smell of alcohol.
A zip lock bag containing .5 grams of marijuana was found under the drivers side seat. He also found four cold bottles of beer and an empty bottle of vodka in the car.
The male suspect reportedly was overheard telling the female that she should have hidden the marijuana better.
Barking dogs thwart theft
A Des Moines Police Officer was called a possible theft in progress on Sept. 16 around 6:25 a.m. in the 23400 block of 26th Ave. S.
The occupant of the house was alerted to something happening outside when his dogs, which were inside, started barking.
He looked out his window and saw a man standing outside giving hand signals to the driver of a yellow van backing up to his boat trailer.
When he went outside to confront them, the suspect yelled, "Is James home?" then jumped into the van, which sped away.
