I have been a resident of Burien since 1992, and have four points to make regarding the annexation of North Highline.
First, in the largest annexation scenario the City of Burien would increase in population by 100 percent. In the smallest scenario it would increase in population by 33 percent. In either case, our identity and sense of community is diluted.
Second, what is our motivation? I perceive it to be simply an effort to contain our public safety costs. This is not going to improve our city.
Third, the city of Seattle has the financial resources to integrate North Highline. Seattle is better able than we are to improve their infrastructure, services, and programs.
Fourth, and most importantly, the residents of North Highline will vote. They will decide to accept or reject annexation.
This is the most significant question to face our city since its inception. The citizens of Burien have the right to vote on it.
