Warriors win in a shootout

Surely the presence of good coaching was in place at Highline Stadium, not to mention, good goalie work by Jessica Kane in the shootout, where the still alive and smiling Seattle Christian Warriors coaches, Kelee Wall and Melissa Bennett, helped their team beat Bellevue Christian, 4-2, in the shootout after a 1-1 tie through regulation and two five minute overtimes of a 1A round of 16 state game Tuesday.
The Warriors improved to 14-2 on the season while the Vikings season ended at 10-8-1. Next up for the Warriors was a match up versus Montesano at Tumwater Stadium last Saturday (after press time.)
"They had the experience in shootouts," said co-coach, Bennet, of their foes, the Vikings. "They had one their last two games in PK's."
But the Warriors had not. And it did not matter. Why? The Warriors were ready!
"We practiced them a ton, in every practice," said Bennett.
Paid off.
Kane watched senior teammate, Noelle Simpson strike the first blow, making a pretty, perfectly placed, left corner shot as the first Warriors kicker of the shootout. Kane came up next and made a great save to put momentum in her team's corner. Then Warriors senior Alyssa Harney scored as the second kicker. The Vikings second kicker scored too, to make it 2-1, Warriors before third kicker Elissa Kane scored to make it, 3-1. The Vikings third kicker scored too, to make it 3-2, but then Kane came up with the biggest save, saving the fourth Vikings kicker shot, on a dive.
Then the fifth Warriors kicker, Rachel Busick, nailed it in to seal SCS' advance.
"We came back, everyone played great, it was a really fun match," said Jessica Kane, in which these two friendly rivals that are not in the same league but obviously OK with each other after a good competive fight. They prayed together after the game in the center of the field.
The game was close, both teams had chances during the game with the Warriors having the most chances in the first half. Elissa Kane passed the ball around well with Harney and others on the field. The Vikings scored first, with 12 minutes off the clock in the second half. The ball bounced around the 18 yard box and was booted in as Kane came out of goal at the six-yard box corner.
Then with 22 minutes remaining, the Warriors got the equalizer when Noelle Simpson scored, trapping the ball in the middle of the field off a cross from the right wing area by Harney.
For the game, the Warriors outshot the Vikings, 9-3. Kane only needed to make three saves for the game while the Vikings keeper made five.
The play of this game was great by all but especially by the seniors of the Warriors, said Wall, getting a nice avengeing of last year's loss.
"It was definitely a team effort, but our seniors set the tone, really stepped up in this game for us," she said. "They really led us in the end."
Simpson is a senior, who scored the team's lone regulation goal . Also, in the shootout, Elissa Kane made her kick , she is a senior, and Alyssa Harney made hers and she too is a senior.
