Every year, many families in Burien area struggle with daily expenses.
That reality, says Nicki Maraulja, community service officer with the Burien Police Department, makes Christmas "a burden instead of a joyful holiday event.
"It's difficult to buy the needed everyday items let alone anything extra," Maraulja noted in announcing the annual program of Burien Police Services to help local families in need.
"Many of my families are in difficult situations," she said. "Some are the working poor, some are struggling single moms, some are forgotten seniors or seniors raising grandchildren on Social Security. And some of my families are on assistance that leaves nothing extra for the holidays."
Marjaulja said every year she tries "to help the families most in need of Christmas help. This year is like most years and we need your help."
Some who give through this Christmas program, like employees at Burien City Hall, "adopt" families. Other citizens donate food and clothing that will be distributed as gifts by Maraulja.
She is looking for donations of new warm winter clothing and food gift certificates to help those in serious need this year.
Warm clothing is needed in all children and adult sizes of hats, gloves, sweatshirts and, especially, coats.
Gift certificates for Fred Meyer, Albertson's and Safeway "are especially helpful," she added. "Any amount in $20 increments is preferred. But no cash, please."
Donations must be made no later than Friday, Dec. 15, at Burien City Hall, which will move to a professional building at 15811 Ambaum Blvd. S.W. on Dec. 8, and the Highline Times at 14006 First Ave. S., Suite B, in Burien.
