Landmark on the Sound in Des Moines, formerly the Masonic Home, has been honored by the city of Federal Way for serving as a shelter during the December windstorm.
Landmark On The Sound, a new non-profit community in Des Moines for people 62 and older, recently was honored by the city of Federal Way.
That city proclaimed Jan. 2 "Landmark On The Sound Day" for accommodating more than 100 people during the power outage following December's windstorm.
Residents of Des Moines and Federal Way were among those from South Sound communities who were sheltered there for several days.
Landmark On The Sound opened the doors of the 1926 Building, known in the region as "The Castle," as a Red Cross shelter following the historical windstorm.
According to the Red Cross, area shelters served nearly 200 people and provided over 520 meals.
"We are extremely honored to be recognized with a proclamation from the City of Federal Way," said Jane Ipsen, CEO of Landmark On The Sound.
"It is our mission to help people, it's what the fraternity is all about, and we certainly are glad we were in a position to be of assistance."
The property, which is owned by the Grand Lodge of Washington, has been a staple in the community since 1926.
