Driver saved from car fire after SeaTac crash
Tue, 04/17/2007
Friday the 13th was both lucky and unlucky for a 24-year-old Kent man after he was involved in an early morning one-car accident in SeaTac.
A King County Sheriff's sergeant pulled the man, still unconscious, from the burning car he had been driving moments earlier-then arrested him a short time later for driving under the influence.
According to sheriff's office spokesman Sgt. John Urquhart, Sgt. Bryan Howard was on patrol when he heard the sound of loud collision around 1 a.m.
Looking for the crash, he found a car high-centered and teetering on a jersey barrier at International Boulevard and State Route 518. The car was already on fire and billowing dense smoke.
Smoke in the passenger compartment prevented Howard from seeing if there was anyone in the car until he knocked the fire with his fire extinguisher.
Then he climbed into the car from the passenger side and by feel found the unconscious driver behind the steering wheel-and belted in.
Howard cut the belt with his pocket knife, and dragged the victim from the car. Then he went returned to the car and searched for other occupants, but found none.
As he dragged the still-unconscious driver farther away from the vehicle, the car became fully engulfed in flames.
The driver was arrested and turned over to a trooper from the Washington State Patrol.
Howard, 38, a 16 year veteran of the sheriff's office and a K-9 sergeant, was treated for smoke inhalation at Highline Medical Center and released
2 drivers arrested after I-5 accident in SeaTac
Two women were injured and two drivers were arrested following an early morning accident April 8 on Interstate 5 in SeaTac.
According to the Washington State Patrol, a 1994 Chevrolet Caprice was heading south near Orillia when its driver hit a guardrail around 2:10 a.m.
The driver, a 23-year-old Seattle man, and a passenger, an 18-year-old SeaTac woman, got out of the vehicle after the crash and stood on the road, troopers reported.
Then a 2001 Mitsubishi Diamante, driven by a 21-year-old Spanaway man, crashed into the Chevy, pinning the 18-year-old woman against the guardrail and seriously injuring one of his passengers, a 23-year-old Tacoma woman.
Medics took her to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where she was admitted in serious condition. The SeaTac woman was taken to Valley Medical Center in Renton.
Three other passengers in the two vehicles also were treated for injuries at local hospitals
Troopers arrested both drivers after determining that drugs or alcohol may have been involved.

On April 3, around 3:30 p.m., a strong-arm robbery occurred in the park next to Tyee High School.
According to police, a couple suspects assaulted the victim and took his backpack.
The following day, School Resource Officer Neil Woodruff developed suspect information, coordinated his investigation with the King County Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Unit, and prepared photos of likely suspects.
The victim made a positive identification from the photos.
Woodruff then located the suspects in their car in the Tyee area and arrested them.
