Elvis is coming to the Highline Performing Arts Center.
Local entertainer Danny Vernon will bring his Mother's Day Spectacular - A Tribute to Elvis-- to Burien on Sunday, May 6, at 7 p.m.
"We are delighted that Danny agreed to do this fundraiser for us," said organizer Diane Kennish, a long-time volunteer with the Miss Burien Organization.
The Mother's Day show, actually a week before the official Mother's Day, will be a fundraiser for the local pageant.
In addition to a full band and back-up singers on stage, Beka Simmons, Miss Burien 2007, Tiffany Tran, this year's Miss Burien first runner-up, and Jenny He, this year's Miss Burien Seafair representative, also will perform on stage.
"Danny got his start right here ... at the SeaTac Holiday Inn," Kennish recalled. "Back in his days as a singing waiter at the Top of the Inn, he did a few Elvis numbers, but over the past few years, he has taken it to a completely different level."
Staff at the Emerald Queen Casino, where Vernon has performed to sold-out houses, has described him as "a flexible and dynamic performer with an amazing voice and ample charisma."
He also has entered a number of Elvis contests, including the Professional Elvis Tribute in Penticton, Canada, where he took first prize, and the International Elvis Extravaganza in Las Vegas, where he placed third.
There will be raffle baskets for Mom, and refreshments from Sal's Deli in the lobby, which will open at 6 p.m.
The Miss Burien Organization is an all-volunteer group dedicated to making a difference in the lives of young women through personal growth and development for the betterment of the community.
It is part of the Miss America Organization-the world's largest source of scholarships for young women. Last year, the Miss Burien Organization awarded over $6,000 in scholarships, all of which was raised by volunteers, with the help of sponsors and donors.
This year, the Miss Burien Scholarship Pageant will be on Nov. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer, donor or sponsor, or need an application to run for Miss Burien, may contact Executive Director Janie Bakke at 206-241-4732.
