A recent Seattle P-I article was headlined, "Arts an Economic Engine." The article explained that arts organizations in the Seattle area generate $330 million annually. The arts were found to be "a cornerstone of Seattle tourism," with "37 percent of audiences" from outside King County."
At Burien Little Theatre, we know from talking to our patrons and local businesses that the arts, and in particular Burien Little Theatre, generate money for the City of Burien. A large number of our patrons eat or shop in the Burien area before or after our performances. For example, we partnered with a local restaurant to offer a dinner and show package, which has proven to be a success.
We have done surveys of our audiences. Our audiences come from all over: Burien, Des Moines, Kent, SeaTac, Renton, Seattle and a fair number from outside of King County. The revenue Burien Little Theatre brings to Burien is not just from Burien residents.
Not only does Burien Little Theatre spend money to stage performances, we also pay rent to the Burien Parks Department and the Highline School District, and we pay for local utilities. In short, Burien Little Theatre, although a volunteer organization, is a viable part of the economic engine for the City of Burien.
We are just completing our 51st year of community theater, and our 26th season under the name Burien Little Theatre. Few businesses in Burien can claim a longer legacy.
As we prepare for our 27th season as Burien Little Theatre, please keep the Burien arts scene, and in particular Burien Little Theatre, in mind. With assistance and encouragement from the City and the community the arts, including Burien Little Theatre, can thrive and become an even larger profit center for the City and a cornerstone for tourism to Burien.
