The anarchists-in-training from The Evergreen State College who were recently arrested for rioting at the Port of Olympia may be terribly misguided in their radical beliefs, but they are probably sufficiently observant to take note of the recent decision of the Olympia city prosecutor to dismiss charges against the first of the rioters.
Not only were the charges of criminal trespass dismissed against the first of the 62 who were arrested, but the clear implication of additional dismissals in the future was contained in the statement by the prosecutor that to prosecute these rioters "could be a big burden on the city."
The message to these rioters is clear: Break the law in sufficient numbers, and the city will let you off the hook because prosecuting numbers of such lawbreakers "could be a big burden on the city." It appears that the magic number is 62 but, in fact, could be considerably smaller. Shame on the Olympia city legal staff!
