Mrs Crachit grabs play spotlight

Everybody loves a good spoof ... you know, wonderful comic send-ups of old classic tales, such as Young Frankenstein and Monty Python and the Holy Grail" that still tickle the collective funny bone of America to this day.
So leave it to the theatrical wizards at the Burien Little Theatre to offer a delightfully silly take on that tried and true holiday classic, A Christmas Carol, with their latest show-Mrs. Bob Cratchit's Wild Christmas Binge.
Playwright Christopher Durang pays humorous but affectionate tribute to Charles Dickens' tale of ghostly Holiday Cheer with something completely different for the season.
You remember everyone's favorite miser Ebenezer Scrooge (Michael Albert). Well, he's there with all his penny-pinching and bah-humbugging ways still intact. But, bear in mind, this is a wacky re-telling of the Christmas theatrical mainstay.
Therefore, imagine Scrooge with some very modern American business practices and at least one neurological diagnosis (and an interesting social/love life as well), and you've gotten the gist of Mrs. Bob Cratchit!
And what about the ghosts of Christmas past, present and yet-to-come? Hey, folks, this is the 21st century, and multi-tasking (perhaps due to corporate downsizing and budget cutbacks?) is the way to go!
Our three Spirits are now rolled into one, and boy, is she hot stuff (Heidi Jean Wrinrich)!
But the question of the day remains, why is the saintly Mrs. Cratchit the title character? Wasn't she just a "minor" character in the original story?
Well, it seems that Mrs. C (Amy Wyatt) is "fed up to here" with the stay-at-home mom routine (21 children and counting...) and needs desperately to get away for some Alone Time. What's a Dickensian mother to do?
Without giving away any more of the plot, let us suffice to say that Mrs. Cratchit has herself a hot time in Merry Olde England. Don't blink too often or you might miss the many unexpected twists and turns that only Christopher Durang, the master of slightly twisted humor, can take.
Keep an eye out for some fine comedic performances by BLT's cast of 11 actors. As the multi-tasking Ghost, Heidi Jean Wrinrich drives the action of the play that is just what the show needs. She sings, she dances, she has comic timing ... and she's fun!
As Mrs. Cratchit, Amy Wyatt is an amusing blend of sweetness and exasperation.
Scrooge has gotten a refreshing face-lift in Michael Albert, whose comedy works on all levels.
Thomas Maier's Bob Cratchit is a lot of fun, and Tiny Tim will never be the same after Telisa Steen gets her teeth into this role.
And don't miss the many fine supporting actors who, for the most part, play multiple roles taken from both Olde England and from modern American culture.
There isn't a weak link in the cast that also includes Jackie Graybill, Anna Richardson, Zachariah Robinson, Don MacEllis and Carolyn Monroe.
Director Steve Cooper, orchestrating his third BLT show (last season's Visiting Mr. Green and season opener Dracula shows off his versatility with an unexpected flair for comedy. Looks like he's on a roll.
After you've done the rounds of The Nutcracker and Handel's Messiah at other venues, take a peek at Mrs. Cratchit. Burien, this is the holiday laugh you've been waiting for.
Mrs. Bob Cratchit's Wild Christmas Binge continues through Dec. 16, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.
