An open letter to Des Moines residents and the City Council:
I would like to encourage and invite anyone interested in the present and future development of Des Moines to GET INVOLVED! Many issues are being discussed that will affect how our City grows. Having lived nearly all of my 38 years here, I have seen and been a part of many changes Des Moines has encountered.
I truly feel that the City is at the cusp of a fantastic renaissance. New commercial ventures such as the potential port property business/retail park and the Pacific Ridge development projects will be significant in shaping the future. Great new businesses such as the Butler Bar and Grill and the improved Lighthouse Lounge are demonstrating what is possible in the downtown business district. Des Moines is a great place to live. And getting better.
This is a community where people work, raise families and live their lives. I feel that the city council focus needs to be on the people who live here and the things that define a livable community. Parks to walk or play in, with play equipment for our children, community events and programs for children of every age are what distinguishes the wonderfully inclusive and vibrant true communities where people feel a sense of ownership and pride, from just a place people live.
It is important that Des Moines citizens communicate with city council what is important to them. This is our town and helping decide how it is run is our responsibility. Now is the time to get involved and have a voice in how this city grows.
I recently saw a petition around town from the Des Moines Condominium Assn. They want no new restaurants at the Marina and to keep the boat launch open. While I certainly want the boat launch to remain, the Marina is Des Moines' greatest asset that will enliven and enrich the entire community. I certainly understand why the condo folks are concerned, but the larger point is they are doing something and being heard!
In this city, it seems like the same few people have been saying the same few things for many years and I feel it is time for some new perspectives to emerge. Des Moines has many bright, talented, creative, interested, uninvolved people. All of you sitting on the sidelines observing, get in the game. This is your town as much as anyone's. Every person is valuable to the community and can contribute.
As a member of the community group, Destination Des Moines, I would encourage anyone considering their place in the community to attend its annual meeting Feb. 9 at 9 a.m. at the Des Moines Police Department conference room. It is a fun, casual group of citizens and business owners interested in what happens in our neat little water town.
Every single person is welcome and can truly make a difference. Now is your time.
