I believe some clarification is needed for the letter of Mark Ufkes in your March 5 edition. As a 30-plus year homeowner in White Center, and an attendee at this Feb. 2 meeting, I find Mr. Ufkes reference to "a group of We Hate Seattle participants" quite insulting.
Also, Mr. Ufkes seems to indicate that the meeting was not open to all area residents. Yet it was announced at the January 24 South Delridge & White Center Community Safety Meeting by a Highland Park resident who had received an e-mail calling it a Public Meeting, and taking place at the St. James facility, where we attend this Community Safety Meeting every month. The White Center News listed this same Feb. 2 function as a Community Meeting in its Jan. 30 issue.
My husband and I have attended this Community Safety Meeting every month for approximately four years, yet have not seen Mr. Ufkes in attendance there. This meeting is attended by both Seattle and White Center residents, and facilitated by employees of the Seattle Neighborhood Group assigned to the area. We all have worked well together to find ways to make our combined communities a safer place. Perhaps Mr. Ufkes should attend sometime to see the lack of "hate" in these participants, and instead of offering him donuts, he could share in the dinner that is provided by the White Center CDA each time.
AND, many of us homeowners in our area of White Center would like to know if, when and where the White Center Homeowners Association (with Mr. Ufkes as President) conducts their secret meetings.
