Hair stylist Meegan Atkins at Babalouise hair salon, 616 N.W. 65th St., works on customer Alicia. Salon owners say despite the current recession, business is steady.
With some new strategies and a little extra effort, Ballard salons keep chugging along.
Hair is not going to stop growing just because the economy is bad, after all.
Many salon owners are optimistic, and view their business as a means of escaping life's daily struggles.
"It's not about getting a haircut, it's about getting nurtured," said Loraine Jackson, owner of Elements Skin Care, 8012 15th Ave. N.W. "They (people) still need that aspect of their life."
Jackson has created coupons and a newsletter to help keep her clients connected and motivated.
"Certainly the hair salon is sort of recession proof," said Inez Gray, owner of Habitude Salon Spa Gallery, 2801 N.W. Market St.
Business for Habitude has changed to accommodate its clients. It now offers "express rejuvenations," or quick spa treatments, for the savvy spender.
Gray also sends out a weekly newsletter with information about upcoming promotions.
Since Habitude is a place for clients to distress, employees have been instructed not to talk about the economic recession.
Business is as good as ever for BabaLouise, 616 N.W. 65th St.
"Our regulars are still our regulars," said the assistant manager Jeffrey McNulty. "We see them all the time."
