Two foes were put away by two Federal Way teams in a girls soccer double-header at Federal Way Memorial Stadium this past Thursday.
Decatur fended off Puyallup, 3-1, after Thomas Jefferson blanked Auburn, 2-0.
Both teams are in contention for one of four playoff berths out of their respective divisions. Decatur (6-3) plays in the South Puget Sound League South Division and Federal Way is a member of the SPSL North Division.
Both games had more than their share of rain, and lightning lit up the sky before TJ played in the opener - causing some official discussion about a postponement.
The rain was the most torrential during halftime of the Decatur match - but the Gator girls already led, 2-0, at that time.
“We played very well as a team tonight and for all 80 minutes,” said Decatur head coach Christy Gross.
The Gators scored their third goal with 15:50 left in the second half, then the Vikings cut the final margin to 3-1.
Making it interesting was the fact Decatur had only eight shots on goal while Puyallup recorded 15 shots on goal.
Sophomore goalie Kayla Lipston had a lot to do trying to keep the Vikings away from the goal net.
“She had three just beautiful saves,” Gross said.
Freshman midfielder Hannah Herbert put the Gators on the stadium’s new scoreboard first, slipping the ball into the right side of the net. Ashley Graves, another freshman, earned the assist after settling the corner kick and getting the ball to Herbert.
Junior Rachel Markey scored the next goal with 1:23 to play in the half. Markey rolled the ball past Puyallup keeper Sarah Rose. Abby McFaul earned the assist.
Carissa Frazier scored the third and final Decatur goal at 15:50 to play in the second half, sending a hard grounder into wide open left side.
Puyallup’s only goal hit the lip of the net and came down and in. Sarah Garling scored the goal off an assist from Lauren Conley.
Thomas Jefferson scored twice in the final 10 minutes of the second half to beat SPSL North rival Auburn in Thursday’s opener.
TJ’s Hannah Friedman found the back of the net at 9:39 to go, moving up close and putting it in off the goalie’s hand.
Friedman struck again with 5:51 left, shooting from the left side into the right side of the net.
