Friday became a supremely significant night on several fronts for the Seattle Christian volleyball team.
As senior statistician Kara Strand viewed the events of Senior Night, senior players Megan Collier, Alyssa Abe, Caley Comiskey and Lisa Sykes joined their teammates in a Warrior 3-0 sweep of the Charles Wright Tarriers.
With the victory, SCS remained tied atop the Nisqually League 1A standings at 10-1 with Cascade Christian. The Seattle Christian overall record improved to 13-1. SCS can secure a tie for the regular season title with Cascade by defeating Vashon on Tuesday (after press time). Due to the Friday win, the Warriors would still meet Cascade on Saturday at the Cascade gym for a state berth out of the league tournament.
SCS spent little time imposing its will upon the Tarriers. Led by a huge contribution by freshman middle hitter Katie Collier, the Warriors drilled holes in the soft middle of the Charles Wright Academy defense. The first game was competitive until a 7-0 surge sent SCS spiraling away to a 15-6 lead. An 8-1 scoring run sealed the deal in a 25-8 win.
“They just kept putting the ball just over the net in the middle,” explained Collier who finished with 10 kills, eight digs and six blocks. “Our team is really good. We’re definitely going to state.”
Aggresively attacking again, the Warriors ran off 12 consecutive points to open the second game on the serves of Lisa Sikes. The margin reached 17-2 before over cautiousness by SCS enabled Charles Wright to rally within 18-9 and 19-13. At that point SCS reasserted itself for a 25-14 win.
“The attitude of our team is really good,” declared Megan Collier, who added 23 digs, nine kills, two blocks and three aces. “Our goal is to play to our best. We believe in ourselves and know each other well to pick each other up.”
Great serving and blocking powered the Seattle Christian Warriors to leads of 17-7 and 22-8, but CWA flurried at the end to make the final Warrior margin 25-15.
“I’m really excited,” exclaimed Sikes. “This is my first year in varsity and I’m excited to play.”
Sikes knocked 14 kills in her final home appearance. She also served two aces.
“The first game was really good,” said SCS head coach Mike Todd. “Everybody was hitting aggressively. That was Katie Collier’s best game. The girls play better than when they are not cautious. It was that they had some down time and kept their composure and still pulled the game out. For the season, we began by putting the kids in new positions that suited themselves well. They’ve passed well and served well, which are the basics for winning.”
In a full team effort, various players added to the SCS win. Caley Comiskey had eight kills while Melissa Collier earned 12 kills and eight blocks. Brooke McGann had 19 kills. Junior Amanda Rablin passed for 28 assists and dug out eight hits to go along with two service aces. Camille Wilson had six assists.
