The Burien/Normandy Park Fire Department will replace its two stations after voters overwhelmingly approved a bond measure in the Nov. 4 election.

As of 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, King County Elections reported 67.09 percent (5,276 votes) approved the bond while 32.91 percent (2, 558 votes) rejected it.

At 36 cents per $1,000 of assessed value, the bond will raise $25 million over 20 years to build two new stations, including a training facility.

It is the first time in the department's 80-year history that it requested a construction bond.

In legislative races, Tina Orwall will enter the state House of Representatives after defeating Todd Gibson. Orwall, a Democrat, received 63.83 percent (12,270 votes) and Gibson garnered 36.08 percent (6,935 votes.)

Orwall is a social worker and former chairwoman of the 33rd District Democrats.

Gibson, who stated his party preference as G.O.P., is a Normandy Park advertising agency owner and adjunct instructor at Highline Community College in Des Moines.

Orwall will replace Shay Schual-Berke, who served 10 years in the state House. Previously, Schual-Berke served on the Highline Public Schools board.

State Rep. Dave Upthegrove will become the senior House member from the 33rd District after garnering 71.24 percent (13,633 votes) of the vote total to Tam Lam's 28.63 percent (5,478 votes.) Upthegrove is a Democrat while Lam listed his affiliation as prefers G.O.P. Party.

Powerful Senate Ways and Means chairwoman Margarita Prentice turned away a challenge from fellow Democrat Juan Martinez. Prentice received 68.65 percent (12,549 votes) of the vote while Martinez received 30.75 percent (5,622 votes.)

The 11th District's two Democratic House members will retain their seats.

Zack Hudgins received 71.70 percent (13,306 votes) against David Morris, prefers Cut Taxes G.O.P Party, who garnered 28.18 percent (5,230 votes.)

Bob Hasegawa received 73.93 percent (14,042 votes) His Republican opponent, John Potter, received 25.94 percent (4,927 votes.)

All three incumbent Democratic lawmakers in the 34th District breezed to victory without opposition.

State Sen. Joe McDermott received 98.33 percent (24,829 votes) of the vote. Eileen Cody gathered 98.66 percent (2.368 votes) and Sharon Nelson received 98.68 percent (23,199 votes) in the House races.

Voter approval of mass transit expansion will bring two new light rail stations to the Highline area.

In addition to the South 154th Street station in Tukwila and the Sea-Tac airport/SeaTac city center station, both scheduled to open next year, the area will get a station near Highline College in Des Moines and at South 172nd Street in north Federal Way.

The Sounder commuter station in Tukwila will also be upgraded and funds will be allocated for the transit center in Burien.

The Sound Transit measure received 61.60 percent (221,002 votes) approval while 38.40 percent (137,746 votes) rejected it.
