At tonight's School Board Meeting proposed improvement projects to Alki Elementary as well as Gatewood and Sanislo Elementary schools will be introduced.
Concerning Alki Elementary, the proposed contract to Western Ventures Construction, Inc., as general contractor, would amount to $596,000. The project would include reroofing and several interior renovations to the school building.
A new roofing membrane would improve student indoor air quality by preventing water from leaking inside. Worn flooring would also be replaced with new carpet and resilient composition tile. Aging HVAC equipment would be replaced or refurbished and a large single glazed window in the lunchroom would be replaced with a new double glazed window system to conserve energy.
Upgrades at Gatewood and Sanislo Elementary would cost a proposed $749,506, also by Western Ventures. At Sanislo, the project would provide a new roofing system with added insulation, new roof flashing, install five new roof top air handling units, clean existing brick, replace worn carpet in the school's auditorium with more resilient floor tiles and replace the existing cracked playground walkway with a new ADA compliant walkway.
At Gatewood, the project would replace worn linoleum floor with floor tiles, repair wood flooring in the library and replace existing curtain and wall coverings in the school's lunchroom. To improve air quality the existing HVAC fluid cooler would be refurbished, the daycare heat pump would be replaced and exhaust/relief/supply fans would be added.
Both projects are one-time expenditure that would be covered by the Capital BTA II Levy. Both projects would be completed over the summer.
An introduction and possible action by the board on proposed Transportation Standards for the 2009/2010 school year will also take place at tonight's meeting. This proposal includes standardized start times for all schools, with elementary programs running from 9:15 a.m. to 3:25 p.m. and middle schools and K-8 programs running from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The proposed 2009-2010 school calendar will also be presented at tonight's meeting.
