Marion D. Gates, 87, died January 8, 2007, in Des Moines, WA. She was born on June 24, 1919, in Kansas City, MO. The first half of Marion's life was difficult and painful, but the second half was her life's dream. In 1960 her life changed dramatically. She took a job as a sales clerk at the May Company department store and quickly worked her way up to assistant manager. She stayed there until she retired 25 years later. In 1961 she went to a square dance class and met Jack. On July 11, 1964, they were married and had a square dance reception. Together they worked, square danced and traveled through the next 30 years.
They had a cute little 40's home that she kept perfectly. She was a talented seamstress and made drapes and reupholstered the furniture. She wanted a brick patio, but money was tight. She bought 5 bricks every payday and laid them herself until the patio was finished.
After her retirement from the May Co. she went to work for the Los Angeles school district. She treated those hungry little children as if they were her own. When she could no longer lift the heavy food trays she left the school and became a volunteer for Providence Hospital working with seniors.
She received an award from the school district. She also received an award from the city of Burbank for her work with the seniors. She was 81 years old herself at that time.
Through all of her life she loved her family. They were very important to her. But, as all things must do, the Energizer Bunny has stopped. We hope they are ready for her in Heaven. There will be no sitting and she will have work crews working endlessly keeping everything in working order and well dusted.
Her lessons of strength, determination, loyalty, frugality and love will be with us forever.
She is survived by; daughter, Ann C. Sandt; grandchildren, Sherry St. Luke (John), Terry Sandt, Jackie Todd (Roger); and 11 great grandchildren. Services will be held at St. Theresa's Catholic Church located at 3939 SW 331st St. Federal Way, WA. on January 11, 2007, at 5:00PM. Arrangement entrusted to Yahn and Son Funeral Home.
