Three athletes from the Ballard High School boys track and field team advanced past the KingCo championship meet to next week's district championships.
A trio of Ballard High School seniors – triple jumpers Carlos Stanley and Julian Montante and thrower Linton Rowan – advanced to next week's District 2/4 track & field championships with their efforts in the KingCo championship meet May 11 and May 15.
Stanley jumped an unlooked-for 42-4 in placing second to Skyline's Kasen Williams.
Montante improved his personal best two inches to 41-9 1/4 to garner the fifth and final spot to district.
Shot-putter Linton Rowan, a 2008 state meet qualifier, finished fifth May 13, throwing 45-4 1/4 under miserable conditions. Two days later, Rowan added another fifth as he threw a personal best of 123-3 in the discus.
The boys' 100-meter relay, comprised of seniors Montante, Michael Tran, Jack Sandstrom and Stanley, were nosed out by Garfield for the final district spot, as they ran a season best 43.88, compared to the Bulldogs' 43.87.
All told, the boys' picked up 25 points in the team competition to finish ninth.
Senior Lauren Hammerle finished sixth in the 3,200 meter, running a season best of 11:41.26. Hammerle scored Ballard's only three points in the girls' competition.
Erin Philbeck finished 13th with a time of 12:00.35.
Junior discus-thrower Tina Kellogg placed ninth with a toss of 80-1.
In the javelin finals on May 13, Stanley was 12th with a throw of 138-0.
Hammerle finished 14th in the 1,600-meter in 5:31.29. In the boys' 1,600, senior Nahom Workie was 16th in 4:39.96.
In the qualifying rounds of the 100 meter, Tran (11.70) and Montante (11.82) failed to advance. Tran missed advancing to the finals in the 200 meters, as his mark of 23.35 was the ninth fastest time.
Freshman Lauren Cloward, who was a late addition to the KingCo championship meet as an alternate, gained valuable big meet experience, as she was seventh in her heat of the 400, running a personal best of 63.02.
For Stanley, Montante and Rowan, the season continues on May 22 and May 23 at the District 2/4 championships at the Southwest Athletic Complex in West Seattle.
The top four competitors in each event advance to the following week's WIAA state track & field championships in Tacoma.
