Passed away April 12, 2006 after a long illness. He was born Dec. 5, 1925 at the family home in Ballard and resided there his entire life. He was the youngest of five children born to Norwegian parents, Magnus J. and Mary (Skjolsvold) Nelsen. His parents and his siblings, Thelma Oversvee, Ralph, Fred and Morris all preceded him in death.
Don attended West Woodland Grade School and Ballard High. After graduation in 1944, he began his life's work at the family business, Nelsen's Quality Grocery on West Galer Street on Queen Anne Hill, founded by his father and aunt, Elizabeth Nelsen in 1919. After the aunt's retirement and father's death, Don and his brother Fred operated the store together for many years. In 2001, Don decided to close the business and retire.
Don had numerous interests, including coin and stamp collecting, railroad and maritime history, especially the history of Ballard and Queen Anne Hill. His memberships included Bethany and Crown Lutheran Churches, the Sons of Norway, and several historical societies.
Survivors include: sister-in-law, Elva Nelsen; nieces and nephews, Carol Ann Johnson, Rolf D. Oversvee, John A. Oversvee, Kathy Nelson, Mary Beth Wildey, Steve Nelsen, Kurt Nelsen, Julie Nelsen Kreusert, and their spouses and families; special friend, Carol Nagy and her husband, Ed Meyer; as well as his "kids" and customers from the store. His compassion, ability to listen, sound advice and support were lavished on these "kids" in the Queen Anne area of the store.
We especially want to thank his friends, Dr. Margaret Forgette and Andy Larsen who were both with him at his passing.
A Graveside Service will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, April 20, 2006 at Washelli Cemetery, 11111 Aurora Ave. N., Seattle, WA. Remembrances may be made to the Nordic Heritage Museum in Seattle, or the American Cancer Society. Arrangements, Wiggen & Sons Funeral Home.
